Households who rented their dwellings increased significantly to 25,0% in Census 2011, which is a higher figure than the 18,7% recorded in Census 2001. However, those who owned but had not yet paid off their dwellings declined to 11,8% in Census 2011, compared to the 15% recorded for Census 2001.
Those households who occupied their dwellings rent-free were more prevalent in Limpopo than in other provinces with 27,3%, followed by Northern Cape (20,8%) and North West (20%). The households who owned and had fully paid off their dwelling were highest in Limpopo (52,5%) and Mpumalanga (51,7%), followed by Free State (51,5%) and Eastern Cape (50,4%). However, Western Cape and Gauteng had a smaller proportion of these households with 35,1% and 27,7% respectively.
